How to Keep Your Kitchen Clean and Safe

The kitchen can become a place of danger as there are many micro-organisms lurking in your kitchen which can infect cooking and eating. Here is how to keep your kitchen clean and safe from bacteria and other germs.

Steps

  1. Remove unnecessary clutter from surfaces. Discard appliances and gadgets you don't use any more. Be sure that any appliances are still fully maintained and stored in a safe storage that is out of reach of children.
  2. Keep your fridge clean and tidy. Before your do your weekly shopping, remove old and rotten food and clean shelves and racks. Look at expiration dates and be sure to label any containers of homemade food or leftovers.
  3. Use a bin with a lid to keep odors out that attracts flies and other insects. Empty it as soon as it smells, even if its not full.
  4. Wash and disinfect your bin once a week. This will ensure that any germs will die and cannot multiply.
  5. Never use only one chopping board. Make sure that you use one chopping board for meat and one for vegetables.
  6. Change the dishcloth you wipe surfaces with everyday.
  7. Keep kitchen floors free from debris and grease by sweeping and washing regularly.
  8. Don't leave dirty crockery and pans to fester where they can attract harmful bacteria. Wash dishes with hot water and soap as soon as you're done with dishes.

Tips

  • If you have pets, don't leave their dirty food dishes out after meals as they will attract flies and potentially rodents.
  • Cat litter trays should not be in the kitchen. Move them to a more appropriate room e.g the bathroom.
  • Wipe up spillages in your microwave whenever they occur.
