Children look up to adults for guidance while they are still growing and learning. We can not teach our children too much about safety, especially in the unsafe times in which we live.

Steps

  1. Teach your children that snakes, spiders and bees are not necessarily dangerous, but should be respected from a distance. In reality, animals such as cats and dogs are much more likely to harm your child, so respect for all animals must be taught.
  2. Keep your children within sight while in public places, such as malls and so forth. Do not let them wander off.
  3. Choose a babysitter carefully, making sure the person will not neglect your children. When a family member is not available, consider using a sitter that a family member or trusted friend has reccomended.
  4. Explain and show your children how to Dial 911 in case of an emergency. Children have even saved the lives of parents by dialing 911.
  5. Talk to your children and let them know that they can talk to you. I'm Listening
  6. Instruct your child or children to stay with a group while waiting for the school bus; or to stay in front of the school while that they are waiting for you.
  7. Teach your children safety rules on play equipment, such as climbing on monkey bars. Although it can be fun for them, it can also be dangerous.
  8. Teaching your children about right and wrong will also help to keep them safe, especially in their teen years. Teach them the complexities of the real world, though - few things are black & white.

Tips

  • All ocean swimmers need to be aware of rip tides, AKA rip currents. Children, especially, need to be taught about safety rules of swimming, and when and where not to swim. Do not take your child swimming in unknown waters.
  • Ref. # 7 It is best for your children not to try to double up on the swing set, meaning one standing, while the other one sits. A slight movement of the sitting child's arm can send the standing child out of the swing. Therefore, they could be seriously hurt.
  • Make sure that your children know to keep the windows and doors locked.
  • If you start out at a young age developing a good relationship with your children, it may make it easier to be able to talk to them as they grown into teens.
  • A child or children should be taught to run if a stranger in a vehicle should approach them, and tell someone. (See warning below)
  • Children should be told not to play on or near the road. Drivers should watch out for children that may not heed their parents' advice.

Warnings

  • We all know to teach our children to never talk with strangers. This is a matter that parents should begin teaching their children at a fairly young age.
  • Watch small children around swimming pools, lakes, at the ocean and so forth. Plus, teach your children to swim at a young age.
  • Some people have been known to pour peanuts into sodas. This is dangerous. It is possible to suck a peanut down your windpipe.
  • Any sunburn can lead to skin cancer later, so keep sunscreen on your children during outdoor activities.
  • Lack of dental care can lead to gum disease, so your child or children should be taught to brush and properly care for their teeth. Dental care has also been linked to other problems, such as heart disease!
  • Keep medicine, poison, and dangerous chemicals out of the reach of children.
