Steps

  1. Pour a glass or two of milk in a freezer proof container and freeze it.
  2. Remove from the freezer, and break the frozen milk into small blocks with an ice pick.
  3. Place in a blender.
  4. Add some fresh fruit. Bananas will add sweetness, and strawberries or blueberries, or almost any other berry will add flavor and color, along with vitamins and other nutrients.
  5. Blend until the milk and fruit is completely mixed, to the consistancy of a regular milk shake, pour in a glass, and serve.
  6. Add a small amount of a milk flavoring powder if your child refuses to drink this. As an alternative, you may add a teaspoon or two of honey for added sweetness, but the extra sugar may offset the health benefit of drinking the milk.

Tips

  • Remember, if your child has cereal with milk for breakfast, he is still getting at least one good serving per day.
  • Use lowfat, 1% or 2% milk for less fat.
  • Try reading age-appropriate books with your child about good nutrition and the importance of drinking milk.
  • For children who just wont drink milk, you may offer them cheese, cheese sticks, yogurt, or other dairy products, many of which are made with all natural, low sugar ingredients, and contain more of milk's essential nutrients than milk itself.
  • You may use silky tofu to "thicken" this psuedo-milkshake, instead of freezing the milk.
  • Also try putting ice in just a cup of plain milk, because some kids don't enjoy milk on the warmer side...

Warnings

  • If doing it at night, don't put too much sugar. It'll keep your child awake. If at night, heat the milk a bit.
  • Some children suffer from lactose intolerance, make sure your child isn't allergic to dairy products before encouraging them to consume more of them.

Things You'll Need

  • Blender
  • Freezer safe container (similar to Tupperware or Gladware)
  • Fruit and milk
  • A freezer.
