Steps

  1. Consider the traditional option of calling a telephone surf report. Many surf shops offer a free numbers with recorded reports of surf conditions. Pay services such as 976-SURF or 976-WAVE are also available. Unfortunately these traditional voice surf reports cost a few dollars, take a few minutes to check, and cannot be done discreetly in a meeting.
  2. Use a web browser enabled mobile phone to get a report on surf conditions. Cingular, Sprint, newer Verizon phones and other mobile phone users should use http://www.surfline.com/wml. Old Verizon phone and Nextel users should point their handset browsers to www.surfline.com/slwl. These sites are not viewable on a standard PC web browser.
  3. Choose your region. Options include Summary, East, West, Hawaii, and Far Away.
  4. Drill down through the menus to your local break. You can press continue by pressing back to view multiple breaks.
  5. Read the brief text description of surf conditions which should give you enough information to decide whether to go surfing or stay at home.

Tips

  • For the latest buoy weather and reports on you phone, enter http://www.OTESurf.com/go or http://www.yosurfer.com/mobile into your mobile device. The pages are low bandwidth and designed to work on any web enabled mobile device. Low bandwidth pages help keep cost down for cell customers using pay-as-you-go mobile service. There is also a more robust section for more modern phones. Get free access to buoy data in an easy to use and easy to navigate location.
  • Using the web browser on your mobile phone, bookmark the page for your favorite local break for faster access on repeat visits.
  • A pay service which allows you to actually view a live camera of a break is available for $4.95 per month. Check Ninjamobile.com for details.
  • If you don't have a web browser on your cell phone or if you don't want to pay extra for bandwidth charges, use Twurfer (http://twurfer.com/) to get and send cell phone surf reports using simple text messages.
