Steps
- Take an old stick, such as a broom handle (4-6 feet long) and tie or duct-tape a rag or towel on one end. This will form a slight ball. If you want, you can spray the rag with Raid or Black Flag; this would kill any live spiders that you pick up. This is not always necessary, since they will get wrapped in their own web anyway.
- Use a towel end up, go into the rafters, corners, ceiling edges and other areas the webs are, and spin your new tool through the edges of their webs. Remember a web has to connect on the edges, so don't just go whipping through the middle.
- Using a spin motion you wrap the web on the rag, and not just leave it hanging. When done throw the rag into the outside garbage.
- Repeat this about every two months.
Tips
- Spiders walk on their web strands, they don't entangle themselves in the web, until you spin them in.
- If you're really afraid of them you may want to use rubber gloves or throw stick and all away when done.
- Remove their food supply! Find out what they are eating (flies? Ants?) and work to removing those. This will help solve the problem, rather than treating the symptoms...
- The spray product Spider-Not is formulated to kill spiders and leave a residual film that eliminates spiders for months. (Wear gloves and eye-protection.)
- You could also turn the vacuum on the bug -- the long hose will ensure you don't have to get too close. (But keep in mind that you'll have to eventually empty the vacuum bag.)
**Suggestion: Add a throwaway cloth, (not paper!), soaked in spider killing insecticide, (can be sprayed on), into the vacuum bag before venturing forth to suck up the spiders. This way, when you do empty the vacuum bag, at least you can be pretty sure you will not have to deal with any live ones!
