Steps

  1. Figure out what you want. Determine the phone carrier you want (example: Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, etc.).
  2. Compare plans that include free phones. Look in paper for two phones, one 'free' and one that costs about $100. Call this the "Net Cost of Phone".
  3. Call a mobile phone store with a hypothetical situation. Tell them that you lost your phone and you need to buy a new one. Tell them that you are debating between the two phones you identified in the next step. Write down the prices of the phones, respectively. Call this the "Gross Cost of Phone". You'll notice that the phones are not even close to the advertised price. No worries, you?re just doing research.
  4. Understand what the companies want. Cell phone stores want to make profit on a phone they outright sell. Estimate they want to make $50. Call this "Profit on Phone".
  5. Perform these steps for each phone (once per phone):
    1. Figure out the cost of the phone by performing the following calculation: Gross Cost of Phone ? Profit on Phone
    2. Call the answer "Phone Value"
  6. Know what motivates stores. Cell phone stores want to make at least $100 for each contract they have signed (estimated number). Call this the "Contract Profit".
  7. Figure out the value of their contracts. This is the money that the carrier pays the cell phone store for your signed contract. Contract Profit + (Net Cost of Phone + Phone Value). The answer to the formula is an estimate of how much money they make on a contract.
  8. Negotiate for the phone. Now that you know the inside scoop on what?s going on, you can negotiate for your new phone.
  9. Decide on a plan and a carrier.
  10. Run the credit check (if necessary). Understand that this is not negotiable.
  11. Pick a phone.
  12. Negotiate the price of the phone. Getting $20 to $50 dollars off should be relatively simple. If you are not getting a response, leave the store. Tell them you need to shop around. You can always go to another store. When you return to a store, they?ll get hungry for the sale and see that you are interested. Press to have the price of the phone lowered. Only ask once, regardless if they lower the price of the phone, and tell them that you want accessories.
  13. Use the formula. You should have a rough idea how much money they are making. Remember that that everything is an estimate. Use that number to push them into free, or lower price accessories.

Tips

  • Examples of good deals, with contracted service:
    • If a free phone is offered, ask for a free car charger too.
    • If you are paying more than $100 for the phone, ask for a blue tooth headset for 50% off, and a free car charger.
    • If you are paying more than $300 for the phone, ask for a free Bluetooth headset, a free car charger and a free carrying case.
  • Car chargers and leather carrying cases cost a cell phone store $1 - $3 each. Don't let them fool you.
  • Blue tooth headsets cost them about 50% of the mobile phone store pricing.
  • Deposits do not affect your negotiating power. The deposit goes straight to the carrier. You can not negotiate your deposit; you have to pay it.
  • Companies needs to make money, so don't think you are going to get out of there with them making no profit.
  • Once you have your credit run at one store, you do not need to have it run at another store (as long as you are not changing carriers). Tell them you just ran your credit and they can look it up.

Definition of Terms

  • Carriers ? This is the company that provides the cell phone service. Examples include: T-Mobile, Cingular, Verizon, AT&T, Cricket and MetroPCS
  • Cell Phone Stores ? There are two different types of cell phones stores:1. The store that is owned by the carrier 2. the type that is owned by a third party.Telling them apart is simple, the first store only sells service for one carrier and the other sells service for many carriers.
  • Phones ? The actual phone itself. Phones are made by different manufactures. Examples include: Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG.
  • Accessories ? These are the items that you can purchase to enhance your phone. Examples include: car chargers, headsets, cases, face plates, car kits and blinking keypads.
  • Deposits ? If you are signing a contract (and not choosing a prepaid carriers) your credit may come back with you requiring to pay a deposit. The cell phone store can not negotiate this. You have to pay this amount if you want service with that carrier.
  • Contracts ? There are two different types of service when you get a cell phone: contract and pre-paid. When you sign an agreement to have service for a certain amount of time (i.e. ? two years), you are signing a ?Contract?. Generally speaking, you will have better service, better customer service, pay more for your minutes and get cheaper phones and accessories when you sign a contact.
