If you’re like most of us, you struggle daily to balance your lives and your home. You seldom have time to do the things you love to do, much less think about the space around you and how it supports—or doesn’t support—the activities that matter to you most.

It’s important, however, for you to balance the things you need to do with those you enjoy doing. Separate yourself from your daily chores, and think about what you really like to do. See if the things in your home actually help you enjoy your life.

What Matters Most to You?

Ask yourself what really matters most to you. Perhaps it’s your car or your workshop. Perhaps it’s entertaining your friends or spending time in your garden. Maybe it’s your artistic skills or writing short stories. You can probably think of several activities that you love to do, and wish you could do more often.

Write your activities on a piece of paper, and put it aside. This is your List of Activities That Matter Most.

Where Are You Now?

Evaluate the spaces in your home and how often you use them. Think about the space around you and how it supports—or doesn’t support—the activities that matter most to you.

Do you have a sewing area, but never use the machine? You could relinquish that space for something that matters more—perhaps an artist’s easel and paint cabinet. Do you have a music wall, but find that you don’t use it, because you prefer to listen to music in the car? You could use that wall for something else—perhaps to display a new piece of art.

How Do You Get Where You Want to Be?

Outfitted with your List of Activities that Matter Most and your evaluation of how you use the space in your home, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do the items in this space support the activities that matter most to me?
  • Do I have this item because of what it means to me, or what it means to someone else?
  • Is this item representative of who I am today?
  • Is there something in this space I can give to someone else or donate?
  • Is there something in this space I haven’t used in the last year?
  • Is this item essential to my well-being and happiness?

Set yourself a goal to evaluate at least one space each month to better support the activities that matter most to you. Be bold. Try something new. At first, it might be uncomfortable. But as you become more familiar with the freedom and ease of lightening the load, it will become easier.

Don’t go through your home and immediately call in a trash removal service. Some of these decisions might take time to adjust to. However, just by focusing your attention in a new direction and approaching things with a different perspective, you have set the wheels in motion for creating more space for the things that matter.
