A recent Miami Herald article says that even people who work part time out of their home, such as freelance writers, should do their homework. This is especially the case since some policies are said to carry a small amount of coverage for home-based businesses.

The report cites Loretta Worters of the Insurance Information Institute as saying that affordable coverage could be as easy as getting an endorsement to an existing policy. Also, entrepreneurs are advised to check and see whether there is coverage available to the specific industry they work in, such as food spoilage protection for those involved in food preparation.

According to the Small Business Administration website, people with home-based businesses should especially consider getting coverage for things like professional liability, personal and advertising injury, loss of data and general theft, and disability.

With an uncertain economic climate and an increasingly complex set of requirements for entrepreneurs to navigate, checking one's home owner insurance is a good way to be prepared for anything.
