Annual Exam

Although no one likes to have a pap smear or pelvic exam done, it's very important to your health now and in the future. The dreaded exam checks to make sure that your reproductive organs are healthy and helps your doctor detect medical conditions like yeast infections or abnormal Pap smears, that if left untreated could become serious health issues.

During your exam your doctor is feeling the size and shape of your external and internal reproductive organs, including the vulva, vagina, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Does it hurt?

No, a pelvic exam does not hurt. Most women describe the experience as a sensation of crowding or fullness in the vagina, but there really isn't any pain. It's more uncomfortable and it can be a bit embarrassing if it's your first time. Also, there will be even more discomfort if you tense up, to even though it is hard, try to relax.

The reaction of many women to having fingers or a speculum placed in the vagina is to close the legs or squeeze the vaginal muscles. While it may be instinctive to clamp down, tensing the muscles often will make you more uncomfortable. The best advice that can be given is to relax. Relax, relax, relax!

What does it feel like?

COLD! You will feel touching with gloved fingers on the outside of your genitals. During the annual exam you will feel two fingers in the vagina and the other hand on the abdomen gently pressing the tissue between the two hands. Next, your doctor will insert a speculum into the vagina. The speculum comes in different sizes and some doctors will warm it to minimize discomfort.

The Pap Test

During your exam, you will also be given a Pap test which is a screening test that helps your doctor detect cellular changes in your cervix (the opening to the womb at the end of the vagina).
