For couples, one way of celebrating the happiness of the relationship that they are in is to have a family. Most married couples tend to have children within a couple of years of their marriage. This only makes sense, since most couples nowadays get married after being together for some years anyway.

However, when it becomes evident that a couple is not going to be able to naturally conceive a child together, the couple starts thinking about surrogacy. In a surrogacy situation, a woman who has already had children of her own elects to be impregnated with the fertilized egg of the couple, and thus deliver the baby for the couple.

Surrogacy has been done for a couple of decades now, and hundreds of children have been born thanks to this situation. Some couples might find their gestational carrier from their own family, for example. If you were to do a basic Internet search for couples who have done this, you would find more than one. In fact, if they are of the appropriate age, some women actually ask that their own mothers be the gestational carriers!

In most situations, and as much as a mother might want to give birth to her own grandchildren, the couple will begin the surrogacy process via a fertility service, or with the help of a specialist. Usually what happens is that the couple will first try to conceive via processes such as in vitro fertilization or artificial insemination. If that is unsuccessful, their specialist will refer them to an agency that will place them in contact with gestational carriers.

The first thing that the couple will be asked to do is to fill out an application form. This form will ask detailed questions as to what (besides a baby, obviously) they hope to gain from the gestational carrier process. Once the application has been reviewed, the next step is to schedule a consultation with the couple. During this consultation, the couple will be familiarized with the details of the process (in terms of what their medical plan covers, additional fees, things like that) and then the couple will start the last phase of the process – finding the gestational carrier.

Agencies providing gestational carriers work one of two ways. In the first way, the couple gets to choose their gestational carrier. Potential gestational carriers will fill out applications and include photos of their own family within them. Once the carrier has been selected, the two parties will meet to discuss the actual process, which might include fertility medications.

In the second way, the gestational carrier will actually choose the couple for who she would like to carry their child. Again, this selection happens as a result of an application process. Obviously, the two parties will not make the final decision until they meet in person. During this meeting, they should talk about the task at hand as well as more informal things. After all, the couple will be involved in each phase of the process, and the result could be a lasting friendship.
