Eating has become quite a pastime for many people around the world. While eating lots of fatty foods can be fun, it can also lead to a myriad of different health problems. Over time, the fat can start to build up in the arteries, in turn causing high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and a significant risk for a heart attack or a stroke. However, medical technology has advanced to such a point where a patient can be tested to see if he or she really is at risk for various medical problems.

One such procedure that can be used to test how at risk a person is for certain diseases is the CT angiography. This procedure is actually a scan, and it can be used to detect abnormalities in the blood vessels of the body. What are the specific kinds of maladies that a CT angiography can scan for? Things like arteriosclerosis, aneurysms, and clots are all examples.

Something that people who have been told that they need a CT angiography ask is in reference to ho they should prepare for such a procedure. The most important thing that the patient will need to do is show up on the day of the procedure wearing comfortable clothing that does not have any metal in it. The patient should also not be wearing any accessories such as glasses that have metal in them. The main reason for this is because the metal will affect the efficiency of the scanning machine.

Another question that people often have about the CT angiography is in regard to what exactly the scanning machine looks like. The machine can be thought of as a large circle with a hole in the middle for a tube. The patent lies down on a narrow examining table that is then pushed back into the machine. The top of the machine will then rotate around the body to scan it. It is important to note that the patient needs to stay completely still while the scan is in progress.

The patient will be asked to lie either on their stomach, on their back, or on their side, depending on the area of the body that is being scanned. In order to make sure that the patient remains as still as possible, straps might be used to secure the patient in place. Additionally, pillows will be given to the patient to make sure that he or she remains comfortable.

Next, the patient will be given an intravenous with a contrast material. This contrast material is meant to highlight the blood vessels that are being scanned. Once the contrast material has successfully entered the body, the scan takes place. The amount of time that it takes to complete the scan depends on several different factors, but it usually takes less than a minute for the scans to work. More time is actually spent on the amount of preparation. Once the procedure has been successfully completed, then unless otherwise specified the patient can resume his or her usual activities.
