Dynamic Or Updateable Content Website

Traditionally, when a website design was created, the designer would upload the pages as static HTML pages. Since then, an increasing number of static websites pages have been transformed into a dynamic website. With a dynamic website, the pages of your website will change on an as needed basis.

1. What Is A Dynamic Website?

Many websites that you visit now have dynamic website content. This would mean that areas of the website may be different each time you visit that website. With a dynamic website, you will get the most recent information on each visit to the website. These websites will either pull their information from a database, or from information entered on a form. Rather than populating the information on your website when the site is created, a dynamic website will populate the information on your website, as the individual page is requested.

There are two ways that you can program a dynamic website. The first is with Server Side Includes. Server side includes may have the server read any database information to send the information in the format that fits in with the website design. If you see the current date displayed on a website, this is also using a server side include. The web page is requesting the server's date and time, which it displays on the page.

The second way to create a dynamic website is through client side includes. For a client side include, the server sends the web page information. Once the client's browser receives the programming, it will perform the command. A good example of a client side include would be where the image changes when the visitor rolls the mouse over the image. Unfortunately, some web browsers are automatically set to prevent script from running on the local machine.

2. What Is A Static Website?

Unlike a dynamic website, static websites can be easily put together, no matter how much HTML you know. As static web pages are only updated when a change needs to be made to the page, each time someone visits your website, the page will have the same information, displayed the same way.

If you need to update website information for a static website, you will need to change the information, or add the new information to each page, and then upload this changed page to the server. If your website has many pages, not only can this get difficult, but the bigger your website, the more chance that you will miss updating one of the pages.

There are instances where static website pages are the best choice. For example, static websites are a great tool for a designer to use to show how a particular website design is going to look.

3. Dynamic vs. Static Websites

Sometimes, it is difficult to tell whether you are looking at a dynamic website or a static website. Some dynamic sites will have sections of pages, or even whole pages that are static. This doesn't mean that you cannot update website information. It simply means that the website design is taking advantage of the best of both worlds.

Sometimes, you will have a website that is both a dynamic website and a static website. An example of this would be a directory website where the menu stays the same between the pages, but the rest of the page displays different information, depending on what categories were selected for the directory. Many advertising and tourism websites use this method, so they can update website information each time they add new advertisers to the database. They will add information for the new advertiser or change any existing information. The website design will not change just because the website information has changed.

At times, you will have a dynamic website design that displays static information simply for the convenience of the website owner. This method of setting up a website simply makes it easy to update the information on an as needed basis without having to search through every page in the website to make sure that you updated everything. This is especially helpful when the website is extremely large.

4. What Are The Advantages To A Dynamic Website?

Depending on how your dynamic website is set up, when someone visits your site, they may find a website that is more personalized to their visit. The web server will store little text files called cookies on the visitor's computer, so it can recognize them the next time they visit.

With an ecommerce website, you will want to have a dynamic website. Each time your inventory changes, you will want to be able to update website information for your most current inventory. This may be set up to be done manually, where you would put in the new inventory and new inventory levels every day, or every couple of days as needed. This may also be done automatically. The website information would update as each customer made a sale.

If you decide that you want to automate sending out a weekly or monthly newsletter, you can use a dynamic website to accomplish this. You would set up a database with your customers' email addresses. Once you hit send, it would automatically send the newsletter to everyone in your database.
If you want a members' section to your website to match the newsletter you send out, you can use dynamic website programming to set up a user area. The customer would enter their username and password and see different information from someone who did not enter a user name and password. That makes things easier when you have a website where the members pay a fee to join.

With a dynamic website, you can track information about visitors to your website. The time of day they visited and where they found the link to your website are two very valuable pieces of information. With a dynamic website, you could easily track this information through cookies placed on the customers' computers.

5. Why Choose A Dynamic Website?

There are many reasons to choose a dynamic website rather than a static one. If the information in the website changes frequently, or if you want to make suggestions to some of your website visitors, you may decide that it is easier to have a dynamic website. If you want to be able to update website content on your own, you may decide to choose a dynamic website. If you only have a few items that you want to keep the same each time someone visits your website, you may decide that a dynamic website design is right for you.

You may be thinking that a dynamic website is a great idea, especially since you can update website content as needed. Why would you choose a dynamic website design? Many of the websites you see on the Internet are static websites, not dynamic ones.

If you want to run a shopping cart system, a dynamic website is the easiest way to set up your site. You can change your inventory and prices as needed without having to contact the website design company.

6. Search Engines And A Dynamic Website

Many companies choose not to have a dynamic website for fear that their website will not show up in the search engines. While this may have been an issue several years ago, recent developments in the way search engines handle dynamic website content have changed all that.

The programs that search engines use to catalog the web, often called robots, spiders, or web crawlers are able to follow some of the information in the parameters sent to the server that call for the dynamic website information. This means that when you see a url with a "?id=" at the end of it, the search engine spider will be able to understand this request.

Some website design companies found a way around the issues with the search engines before the search engines started being able to read dynamic website information. They would make a static version of the website and upload the static version to the web server. While the search engines are able to catalog dynamic website information, some website design companies still upload the static pages to make sure that everything is found. While this practice may be a good idea, the website design company needs to make sure that they do not bring the page rank in the search engines lower by duplicating the content of your website.

7. How Do You Update Website Content?

There are several different ways that you can update website content when you have a dynamic website. One of the most common ways to update website content would be with an administration area on your website. Generally, these areas are created when the programming for the website is set up. These areas will allow you to add, modify, or delete the records in the database that your dynamic website content is stored in.
A less used way to update website content for your dynamic website is to download the database to your computer, update the records in the database, and then upload the database to the server computer. Some databases are stored on the server in such a way that you are unable to download the database. In that case, you will have an administration area set up on your website for all updates to the content.

There are other server side programming tricks that a website design company can use to help you update your dynamic website. For example, you can set pages up on a server to allow you to upload, edit, and delete files from the server. This would be used in conjunction with the administration area, possibly to allow you to upload images to your website.

Generally, the website design company will walk you through the administration area of your website to make sure that they have added all the information that you wish to place on your website. Once they have the dynamic website set up to your satisfaction, you will be able to update website information whenever you need.

8. Different Types Of Dynamic Website Content

There are several different programming languages or databases that can be used for a dynamic website. The type of programming language will depend on several things and may be decided by the programmer before they start work on the website design. The first question that you may be asked is if you have the information for your dynamic website already in a database. If you do have this information in a database, this will help eliminate many hours of data entry.

For a website, you may have anywhere from one to several databases. All these databases will be stored on the website server. When a visitor comes to your dynamic website, the page will request the most recent information stored in the correct database.

9. Who Needs A Dynamic Website?

There are many reasons that you may need a dynamic website. Several of them have been listed here. There are times dynamic website content will have a higher page rank in a search engine. The search engines determine the page rank according to how relevant the web pages are to the search keywords. Because of how the Internet is constantly changing and evolving, the search engines consider the most recent website content to be the most accurate.

If you want your customers to be able to search your website without having to sift through all the static pages on your website, then dynamic website content is for you. If you have an online catalog, it is also a good idea for you to have a dynamic website. This will allow you to update the catalog information on an as needed basis. For example, if you temporarily sell out of an item, you can take it off your website until you receive another shipment of that item. If you want to update website information without having to go through the effort of updating every page of your website, your best option may be a dynamic website.
