Louisiana's top insurance official is advising motorists that they have several different options to consider when seeking a balance between cheap auto insurance and maintaining sufficient coverage.
A recent report in the Shreveport Times notes that Jim Donelon, the state insurance commissioner, says that 40 percent of the drivers in his state carry the minimum amount of insurance allowed under the law. Another 12 percent drive with no insurance.
While drivers are tempted to reduce expenditures and cut corners during the current recession, carrying insufficient insurance protection can quickly become a recipe for disaster.
"Get as high a deductible that you can afford to self insure," advised Donelon in the report, also suggesting that shoppers take advantage of the considerable competition in the auto insurance market.
Many other states have experienced a variety of insurance-related problems in the current recession, from larger numbers of people skipping insurance entirely, to people who engage in fraud to cash in policies.
Fortunately, consumers have many different options to consider as they search for cheap auto insurance.
