There are tons of different types of data protection software on the market, and for good reason. Data protection is something that all PC users are seriously interested in, because everyone values their data, from the person that uses their computer just for personal day to day use, to the user that relies on their computers, servers, and networks as the backbone of a thriving business. Since there are many different uses and needs for different types of data protection, you will find a lot of different software out there that caters to those needs. Choosing the right software for you will depend on what you need it to do and why. The following are some of the most common types of data protection software programs, so you can get a better idea of what's out there.

1.) Web based backup and recovery - These services and programs allow you to upload copies of your data to a server, and then access it either through the software installed on the computer or by going to the service's website and accessing the data through there. Many of these programs work in the background to make your backup files, and will not interfere with your day to day computing activities.

2.) Local backup and recovery - These programs make copies of your information and files and then save them locally, such as to an external hard drive in your possession, rather than to a remote server that someone else maintains. These programs tend to be very easy to set up with just a few clicks and equally as easy to recover data from, though you risk data loss if something were to happen to your home or place of business that would compromise the external drive as well as your computer, like a fire or a flood.

3.) System rollbacks - These programs “roll back” your system to an earlier period of time in the event of data corruption, allowing you to restore your computer to a time before the corruption happened. The programs take regular “snapshots” of your data, so that you can return to one that worked before. This is useful, because anyone that's experienced something going haywire after a software or hardware update can tell you how easy it is to end up with a corrupted file that renders your whole system compromised and prone to crashing.

4.) Continuous data protection - Unlike traditional backup methods where you set a schedule, and the program runs and makes a copy on that set date, continuous data protection software allows your computer to automatically make a backup version of your data each and every time it changes. This is sometimes called “real time backup,” and means you will never be left with gaps between versions of your stored data that could result in the loss of important information if something goes wrong.

These are just a few of the different types of data protection software you can choose from. Research your options carefully so you are sure to get the program that works for you and suits your needs best.About the Author:
