Cleaning Electric Coil Burners

The coil burners on your stove can become a mess of grease and burnt foods if not cleaned regularly. To prevent the smell of burning every time you turn on the cooktop you should maintain the coil burners. Follow these steps and you can clean an electric coil burner with little hassle.

1. Let the burners cool. If you're cleaning the burners after dinner, let them cool before you begin to clean them. Avoid any potential injury by cleaning the burners at least an hour after turning them off if you can.
2. Remove the burners. Most coil burners should be easy to remove from the cooktop with a small tug where they plug into the main stove. If you aren't sure how to remove the burners don't risk breaking anything. Instead read your appliance manual to determine how to safely remove the coil burners.
3. Wash with soap and water. Use a small amount of dishwashing liquid and place it on a sponge. Hold the burner under a light flow of water and wipe with the soapy sponge. You might need a little elbow grease to remove any stuck on food. Do not soak or submerge the burners in water. Remember that the plugs are electrical and could be damaged if immersed in water.
4. Add a scrubbing agent. If the food is stuck on and cannot be removed with just the soap and water, sprinkle some baking soda onto your sponge. The baking soda is mildly abrasive and should help you scrub. It has the added bonus of helping remove any odors that might be clinging to your burners.
5. Rinse thoroughly. Use warm, clean water to rinse the burners and remove all residues from the soap and baking soda. With coils you will need to make sure you rinse top and bottom as well as between the coils.
6. Clean the drip pans. Once the burners are clean and drying, take the time to clean the drip pans as well. Remove them from the stove then clean following the same steps above to remove stains and stuck on food particles.
7. Once everything dries, reassemble the burners. Replace the drip pans then plug the dry coil burners back into their connections on the stove.
