How to make a masonry feature wall

Author: Andrew Karundu

Feature walls are made of materials like masonry, brickwork, resin coatings, timber, concrete and gypsum. This can be built up during construction of the house mostly concrete, timber, brickwork and masonry or cladded. For other types they are normally claddings on finished walls. This are found in niches, above chimney breasts, lobby, lounge, bay window, dinning and family room walls. The level of works determines the type of finish to be used.

When making feature walls, the location is very important. For niches coats have good aesthetic as they are rich in color. When working in the rooms check the corresponding finish to give a contrast to the wall. Commence the work by hacking off the surfaces for finished walls to receive the finish. Use chisel dressed fair face stones with a thickness of one inch. Cut the stones into slates of atleast one foot in length and various widths.

In masonry feature wall construction, stone slates are patterned as desired. Use a straight edge at the bottom to level the works. Spread cement grouting to the pieces and commence working from the bottom upwards. Lay the pieces block wise to the end of hacked area. Remember to pound them to spread the cement behind to avoid hollow spaces. Use joint less bonding. Keep joints alternate on each row to the top and complete marked area. Brush off cement.

After the feature masonry wall is complete, rake out the bonding horizontal joints. Use a rounded bar of a quarter inch for horizontal key pointing. Remove arising debris and make good floor joint if the wall had commenced from the floor. When this is done give a week and to allow curing. Paint clear vanish in Matt or gloss as desired. For a rustic finish don't varnish. The method can be repeated for brickwork, rustic tiles, rubble and grano materials.
